Only Work With Clients Who Value You: Big Accounts Can Mean Low ROI

Lately, I have encountered several entrepreneurs who are gunning for that next big client. I mean, aren’t we all, really? Whether we own our own businesses or we’re working for a company. But in this case, these solopreneurs are looking for that big cash cow. They’re looking for that huge corporation, that huge company that supposedly has these really deep coffers, and they think that all of their problems will be solved if they can just score those super big clients.

Here’s something that you need to be aware of: sometimes the biggest clients, the biggest companies in the world, they have a lower ROI than smaller companies you might work with. And what I mean is some global companies, not all, but some global companies have almost no budget for the things that they want to do, or maybe not the budget you would like them to have.

Some of them will nickel and dime you and take so much of your time. And when you start adding up how much time you need to give to them compared to a smaller company you might work with, you might spend far less time pleasing that smaller company compared to all the time you’re spending to try to please that huge company.

And when you factor in per hour how much you’re making, you might find that you are actually making a whole lot more working with that smaller company. So just because a company is huge, they’re national or they’re international, that doesn’t mean they’re necessarily the cash cow. Look at that relationship.

Look how much time that you need to spend in order to nurture that relationship. And also look at what you’re getting out of the relationship. It’s not just the money, it’s also how you’re treated and whether or not you feel fulfilled. So don’t be shy about looking at working with some of those smaller and medium companies.

You might find that you are valued much more.
