How Can You Successfully Live and Work with ADHD

Dr. Ari Tuckman shared some important details about living and working with ADHD:

*We all get distracted and lose focus now and then, but folks with ADHD experience this much more often.

*People with ADHD often:

– have a harder time keeping attention on what’s important

– go into action at the last minute instead of earlier

– are more forgetful

– misplace things

– have trouble staying organized

*ADHD makes it harder to see time in the present and harder to feel the future.

*He explains his slight joke: “With ADHD time management, by the time you feel it, it’s too late.”

*Folks with ADHD don’t have unique challenges with time management. The difference is in frequency and degree.

*He explained a concept called Temporal Discounting, which means we feel time less (not timeless). The result is that we say after the fact, “Oh, man! I shouldn’t have done that.” Folks with ADHD experience this much more.

*He recommends connecting to your future self. He explains that concept. I also have an example here.

*Forgetfulness is tied to attention, or the lack of it. Our memory is only as good as our attention.

*Sometimes forgetting something can lead to that urgent crisis, which causes you to bump other tasks and not complete them on time.

*Pausing in the moment to consider what you’ve just been told or what you’ve read will help. Question the implications or next actions and write it down.

*Assess: Is doing this really necessary? Will it help the situation? How much time should I spend on it?

*Give yourself permission to let go of things on your to-do list if the situation has changed, and it’s no longer beneficial to complete something on there.

*At some point you’ll need to decide: how much do I want to focus on improving my efficiency versus what can I cut out?

*ADHD can affect us in different ways depending on the demands at the time. Dr. Tuckman gives some great examples of this. ADHD doesn’t suddenly appear later in life. It’s something you’ve had, but the situations you’re in and your responsibilities have changed.

*Dr. Tuckman’s hack for being more productive: get sleep, eat well, exercise! Fill your tank first so that you’re better able to manage your decisions and your day.
