A Game-Changer for Retention & Improved Performance: Invest in This!
If you understand that improved performance is critical, then you’ve probably heard that “development” is extremely important. If you’re a leader, we’re talking about developing and supporting your team. Whether or not you’re a leader, we’re also talking about developing yourself. To develop and improve performance, there must be some sort of quality learning that takes place.
I had the opportunity to have a conversation with Francie Jain, who created a hub for busy professionals to locate coaches and consultants who offer professional development.
I’m in the professional development space, so obviously I consider learning and development extremely important. I was curious about how to encourage leaders to see the importance of learning and development in connection with improved performance.
Francie shared case studies of improved retention, fewer mistakes (and therefore lower liability), higher morale and other criteria that can be used to measure quality and performance.
Just any old professional development won’t lead to these changes, so I asked her how to figure out what topics will bring about these changes. She shared that a multi-faceted collection of data can assist in making that decision: surveys, informal polls at team meetings, responses to improvement questions on annual evaluations and so on. One interesting recommendation she made was to allow employees to choose their own topics to study instead of providing one topic for the entire organization. She also proposed the idea of giving each employee their own personal professional development budget to use on any education they found helpful, whether it was for their job or their personal life. After all, what happens in our personal world can affect our job performance.
If you are a team leader, department leader, director or in any type of leadership position, you can pick up some professional development considerations from our conversation:
